Room 5, Windsor North School, Year 1-3. Teacher: Lisa Christie.
The History of the Rainbow Warrior
Last term our school was learning about New Zealand history.
We enjoyed learning about Nuclear Free New Zealand and the Rainbow Warrior. At the beginning we thought nuclear power plants were a type of plant instead of an electricity factory! We liked looking at pictures of the mushroom clouds because they really looked like mushrooms and the pictures of the nuclear bombs going off under the water. We thought it was interesting learning about bombs, spies and David Lange.
It was scary to learn about the nuclear bombs and know that we have bombs in our world that can poison us and our world.
Big Idea – We can learn from our past and the past of others.
Achievement objective level 2 – Understand how time and change affect peoples’ lives.
Learning intention – I can explain how an event in the past has helped to shape our lives.
Puppet Pals
We used the Puppet Pals app to show what we know about the Rainbow Warrior.
At the beginning the bit that took the most time was trying to find photos from the internet that are free to use. We used google presentations to search for them and then looked for the same photos with our i pad. Our teacher helped by showing us how to take a screen shot of our picture, how to crop our picture and then how to put it into the Puppet Pal app. At first it was tricky to get it right but after a few tries it started to become easy. There was lots of writing. We all chose the pieces that we wanted to say.
After we had the beginning our group started to add more details from information we got from our reading activity. Our teacher only showed us how to put in the background and characters, and then we explored to find out how to complete our challenge.
