The Erosion Process

Harry and Adelle, Makarewa School, Year 4-6. Teacher: Gabby Asplin.
In the Senior Syndicate we have been carrying out a year long inquiry around our 'Choice Community'. Over the past term the focus has been on how we impact, use and will maintain the natural resources in the Southland community. As a class we conducted science experiments looking at water, soil, and erosion as many of our students have waterways running through their properties (mainly farming) or are regular users of land around water eg. Oreti Beach. After our initial studies and experiments the students drew their own conclusions and wrote explanations about the various processes we had studied. Harry and Adelle decided to take their learning a step further and turn Harry's explanation into a documentary.

Harry wrote an explanation on the the process of erosion as part of our class inquiry into the use and management of natural resources. He and Adelle then decided that they would like to create a documentary of Harry's findings. They both discovered fairly early on that there was going to be a lot of work involved so they spent a considerable amount of their own and class time turning the explanation into a script, storyboarding, and convincing Harry's mum to drive them to the locations they wanted. After filming on the iPad they imported their clips into iMovie and carried out the editing process unaided. While they were both familiar with iMovie they found google to be very helpful for learning little time saving tricks. The last step was to create a short song in Garageband to go behind their title and credits.
