Muttonbirding

Leeym, Year 7&8, Halfmoon Bay School. Teacher: Kath Johnson.

Leeym was invited to go muttonbirding on Green Island with a family friend. Unfortunately this meant taking time off school at the beginning of term two. To make up for missing school Leeym agreed to take loads of photos and video footage and use his school laptop to make a documentary about his trip. This would include learning the process of muttonbirding, taking photos and videos, interviewing the experts, script writing, then using iMovie to put it all together!Leeym used a Samsung camera to shoot the footage for his movie and take the still photos. Once he returned home from Green Island he used his school MacBook and the programme iMovie to make his movie. After he had ordered his photos and cut his video clips it was script writing time. In his first attempt he tried to record the whole script using voiceover in one go! After a bit of coaching from me (teacher) and a couple of classmates he went back to the drawing board and had much greater success recording the voiceover for each clip separately. This meant that if he made a mistake with the audio he didn't have to re record the whole four minute sound track! Next step was to find suitable music - a Google search took him to just the right song a traditional waiata that had had the words rewritten to tell the story of a mutton birding trip - PERFECT!
