Room 2, St Thomas Aquinas Winton. Year 3&4. Teacher: Summer Wilton
The students were learning about safety and decided to use an ipad to get their message across. They decided on imovie as an interesting way to get their message across. The students wrote out a picture story plan for the scenes. We discussed what type of clip they needed for each one.

The teacher filmed due to a student being away. Students discussed throughout with the teacher.

Room 5, Winton School. Year 2.
As part of our year long inquiry about growing our beans, we also looked at smaller seeds and turned growing them into a fun activity. As part of writing and oral language we were looking at giving clear instructions and directions. To put these skills together students videoed clips of each other, using our i-pads, giving instructions about things in class. They videoed this one so they could put it on our blog so everyone could see how to do what we had done. They videoed it in bits and it was put together in IMovie.

DrsABC

Room 11, Winton School. Year 8. Teacher: Julie Mynes.
As young adults it is important that we are aware of situations around us and look out for ourselves and our peers. First Aid is an important course that should never be turned down. Dangerous situations can happen at anytime, anyplace.

All students in years 4-8 took part in a first aid course during terms 2 and 3. It is also important to know before we went on camp.

A St Johns First Aid Instructor visited our school. One of the things we learnt was how to handle situations where friends or family have become injured or become uncouncious. DRS ABC is an instruction we received, and want to pass on to others.

At the start of Term 3 our school received 50 new iPad Minis. The iMovie app is slightly different to that on the laptop, and we were learning to transfer our skills from one device to another. Creating an instruction video on DRS ABC also support our term topic "Whose the Teacher". It was our job to teach others what we know.

On the iPad we learnt how to record our own audio and add to the timeline. We also learnt how to trim/split video clips. We also created slides using the Comic life App, exported them to our camera roll and inserted them into the timeline to show the start of each part of Drs ABC. We learnt how to edit the Ken Berns effect manually and start/stop slides exactly where we wanted them.
Our video was carried out over many days/weeks, as we thought it important to be consistent with the weather and lighting in our video. One of the problems we encountered was windy weather. This did not make good footage and had to retake many clips. A disadvantage to imovie app on the ipad is that we couldn't reduce background noise. Maybe thats something for the developers to think about. We hope you have learnt how to apply DRSABC should you find yourself in a emergency situation.

Garden Gurus, Woodlands Full Primary School. Year 4 to 6. Teacher: Heidi Wilcox.
The Garden Gurus was set up in Term 3, 2012 and includes a group of children who are passionate about gardening. They have learnt many skills about how to create an edible garden and have loved capturing this learning through videos and photos over the months.

The children wanted to make a video on making tomato sauce to share with the rest of the school and also say thank you to the community for their support.

We had already had a number of workshops on imovie, so it didn't take the children long to create a video on a wonderful learning experience that they were passionate about. This video was then shared with the school community at our I.C.T night in Term 2.
Heidi Wilcox

Last year we started the Garden Gurus at Woodlands School. We planted out a tunnel house and 4 plots with lots of different veggies. This year we had heaps of tomatoes ready, so we decided to make our own Tasty Tomato Sauce and sell it to the community.

We made 15 bottles and it sold in 5 minutes!
The Garden Gurus is so much fun and we have learnt to weed and prepare a garden, and plant veggies and harvest them.

Along the way we take lots of videos and photos so that we can see our progress and share this with others.

Team Kahu, Edendale Primary School. Year 5 and 6. Teacher: Jenny Coyle.
A reading group worked on this video in response to the SafeKids promotion of No Helmet No Brain. The pupils had to gather background information and decide on a format for sharing the message with their peers. They developed ideas for a script and, after some fine-tuning with the teacher, they rehearsed and filmed the video - Constable Linda Graham from Gore was able to help out with her car and police hat and vest for the filming!

Lochie Earland and Regan Maguire Ratima, Room 1, Winton School. Year 4 - 6. Teacher: Jalana Collie.
As part of our inquiry topic "Who's the teacher?" the students identified areas of weakness in our school. They developed a plan to address the weakness and decided how they would get their message to the targeted area of the school. Lochie and Regan chose to make a movie to teach people how to train properly for long distance running.

Room 11, Winton School. Year 7 and 8. Teacher: Julie Mynes
LEARNING INTENTIONS :
-to inform children how to wear a helmet correctly and of the consequences if it isn't followed.
- learn how to use an iPhone and an iPad to video scenes from a variety of angles
- email/cloud upload photographs or footage taken from other devices and bring together on the iMovies app timeline using an iPad Mini.
- take photos from different angles to show people exactly how to wear their helmet correctly.
- learn how to trim clips by stroking down on the red position line in the project timeline
- insert voices over existing clips within the iMovie project

PROCESS OF THE PROJECT :
In Term 2 we complete a topic of learning around Road Safety, which included scooter and bike safety, with a focus on the importance of wearing a helmet. This came about because a number of parents in our community were concerned about scooter/bike safety and came to speak through the PTA. We also carried out a statistical investigation using survey monkey into peoples opinion and knowledge of wearing a helmet.
Term 3 we purchased 50 new iPad minis for our school. Learning how to use the iMove app was our focus. We planned a detailed story board and script before recording the bike scene and instructional photos to show the 2-4-1 method. Titles and transitions were added too. We also used the online resources from SafeKids NZ.
